Dr. Mokhtar Chaabane is a highly experienced physician with extensive expertise in sports medicine, manual medicine, and musculoskeletal ultrasound, with a particular focus on football medicine.
His passion for sports began early as a basketball player for Sfax Railways Sport (1982–1994). Inspired by his love for sports, he embarked on his professional career at the National Centre for Medicine and Sports Sciences in Sfax, Tunisia, laying the foundation for an illustrious career in sports medicine. Between 1997 and 2008, he honed his skills with Club Sportif Sfaxien, one of Tunisia’s most prestigious clubs. This experience combined with his contributions to significant international sporting events, including the Mediterranean Games (2001), the African Cup of Nations (2004), and the Handball World Cup (2005), cemented his reputation in the field. Dr. Chaabane also led the Tunisian medical delegation at the 5th Jeux de la Francophonie in Niamey (2005) and the 9th African Games in Algiers (2007).
In July 2008, Dr. Mokhtar relocated to Qatar take up the role of Club Doctor for Al Wakrah Sports Club, under the Qatar Olympic Committee, where he provided exceptional medical support to athletes. By April 2010, he had joined Aspetar as an NSMP Club Doctor and Clinic Director at Al Wakrah Sports Club a position he held until December 2023. In this capacity, he focused on athlete rehabilitation and injury prevention while also contributing to high-profile international events, including the Handball World Championship (2015), the IAAF World Championships (2019), and the FIFA World Cup (2022).
Recognised for his expertise and leadership in sports medicine, Dr. Chaabane was appointed as NSMP Lead Sports Medicine Physician in December 2023, where he played a key role in advancing sports medicine practices. Additionally, he has served as Deputy Medical Director for major tournaments, including the AFC Tournaments in Qatar. His dedication and commitment led to his appointment as NSMP Director of Medical Services in October 2024, where he continues to drive improvements in athlete health and performance.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Chaabane is committed to research and education. He has co-authored 15 scientific papers and serves as a reviewer for several prestigious journals, including Biology of Sport, BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine, and Science and Medicine in Football.
