Innovative technologies targeting athletic shoulder injuries to be highlighted. Doha, Qatar (November 20th , 2013). Following on from the success of previous years, Aspetar will once again open its doors to host the fourth edition of its Current Concepts conference from 23 – 24th November, bringing together world-renowned doctors and specialists to share their insights into athletic shoulder injuries. The Current Concepts conference series has been developed by Aspetar in order to share current advances in the management of certain sports injuries amongst experts in the field. Each year, Aspetar has organised a two-day conference focussing on a particular area of an athlete’s body. The focus for this year’s conference, ‘The Athlete’s Shoulder’, will be examined through a series of lectures, panel discussions, operative techniques and interactive sessions whereby delegates can learn about shoulder pathology and the latest treatment guidelines. Question and answer sessions will also provide delegates with a better understanding of a number of issues concerning the shoulder, direct from the experts. Dr Khalifa Al Kuwari, Aspetar’s Director General, said,

“Shoulder injuries are extremely common in athletes, as repetitive or excessive arm movements in many sports can put a great deal of stress on shoulder joints. Aspetar already treats many athletes with shoulder injuries, both conservatively and surgically, and this prompted us to dedicate this year’s Aspetar Current Concept conference to ‘The Athlete’s Shoulder’ and increase understanding of this area of the body”.

Dr Al Kuwari added, “Aspetar’s Current Concept conferences are doing a great job of raising awareness of important aspects of sports medicine, not only in the GCC but also further afield, as experts have been invited from all over the world to take part.”. As part of the two-day conference, Aspetar has invited Dr Ben Kibler, the Medical Director for Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center in Lexington, Kentucky and a member of the USTA National Sport Science Committee, to address delegates. Dr Kibler is one of the world’s most distinguished orthopaedic surgeons and founder of The Shoulder Center of Kentucky. Previous editions of the Aspetar Current Concepts conferences include the Athlete’s knee, elbow and ankle. Over 180 delegates attended last year’s event and more are expected this year. Aspetar, based in Doha, Qatar, is a world-leading specialised orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital, and the first of its kind in the Middle East. Since 2007 the hospital has provided top-level comprehensive medical treatment to athletes in a state-of-the-art facility that sets new standards internationally. In 2009 Aspetar was officially accredited as a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence (F-MARC). Aspetar is a member–organisation of Aspire Zone Foundation, Qatar’s innovative sports and healthy lifestyle destination.
