Aspetar doctor claims AFC research awards

Aspetar leads the way at 4th AFC Science and Football Medicine Conference Kuala Lumpur 27-03-2011: Aspetar Spanish Sports Physician, Dr Eduardo Mauri was adjudged the best in the Free Paper Presentation categories in the 4th AFC Conference on Science and Football Medicine held last week at the Berjaya Times Square in Malaysia’s capital. Dr Mauri presented his paper on ‘Effect of hamstring prevention programmes in the Qatar Football National Team’. Dr. Mohammed Al Maad’heed Director General of Aspetar said that the recognition awarded by the Asian Football Confederation to Dr. Mauri, is a confirmation that our doctors and experts have the level of efficiency, the scientific merit and professional recognition of the major international sporting bodies. Aspetar’s Director General maintains that such research confirm that Aspetar’s development plan is going in the right direction and that the results will be positive for Aspetar and Qatar. Dr. Al Maad’heed declared in a statement: "We are proud to partner with this event in order to contribute to the development of scientific research in the medical field, sports, and to assist in the ambitious vision and the strategies of the State of Qatar being the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup." The conference featured 12 main speakers and about 150 presenters during the three-day conference which has attracted over 400 delegates from around the world who are top experts in health sciences and football medicine. The event also highlighted scientific presentations and hands-on clinical workshops where topics confronting today’s challenges in medical care and treatment of football players were hotly debated. Among the topics that were addressed was the need avoid and manage cases of sudden cardiac arrest on the football, a topic which was led by Aspetar following the hosting of a conference in February. Dr. Hakim Chalabi, Aspetar Assistant Chief Medical Officer explained that the risk of death to the players during football matches can be related to heart deficiency but not in all cases. Experts recommend the work of a routine comprehensive medical examination for every players, as well as the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), lungs, and electric shock are considered to be recommended actions to deal with cases of sudden death. In addition to the topics of sudden death and playing football in hot weather, the conference discussed various themes pertaining to the examination of the player’s age and new strategies for anti-doping as well as the impact of fasting on players. Dr. Sebastian Racinais Aspetar Research scientist made his presentation on “Playing football in hot environment: effect on performance, recovery, health and acclimatization” during the Conference. He shared data on football players travelling to hot countries to train and compete and demonstrated that significant acclimatization was reached within six days.
