Doha: 15 December 2011 Aspetar Qatar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital (Aspetar) organised an event to mark the World Radiography Day 2011 on Tuesday (December 13).
The World Radiography Day is celebrated each year on November 8. Aspetar had to postpone celebrations of the day owing to Eid Al Adha holidays in Qatar.
It is an annual international initiative intended to raise awareness of, and to stimulate an interest in the profession of radiography. In addition, it is aimed at highlighting the importance of radiography and the indispensable role it plays in the health care environment.
The Aspetar event successfully shed light on the latest methods in the radiography profession as well as honoured radiographers and radiologic technologists.
Following the opening speech by Aspetar’s medical Director/Dr Hakim Chalabi and Radiology Director Salwa Allenjawi, Hanisa Dalwai spoke on radiography as a career, while Dr Nabil Jomaah/Chief Radiologist and Dr Emad Almusa presented case studies.
This led to presentations by Donna Smith; renal evaluation for the use of contrast media, Mohamed Nawas; radiation protection and its effect , and MahmoodaBanu; emergencies in MRI. An interactive question and answer session marked the end of the event.
Allenjawi, Aspetar’s director of Radiology and the event organiser, said: “We used World Radiography Day to raise awareness of radiography and to promote it as a profession, and it went very well - we were kept busy the whole time!”.
“This day serves as an opportunity to sensitise, inform, and educate the public about radiography as well as what radiographers actually do,” added Allenjawi.
World Radiography Day marks the anniversary of the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895. The day calls to raise awareness of radiographic imaging and therapy, which play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. More importantly, it draws attention to ensuring radiation is kept to the minimum required.
