Aspetar’s Sports Medicine department provide comprehensive management of sports-related injuries and illnesses. These include acute and overuse injuries sustained while exercising as well as injuries and illnesses which affect an athlete’s ability to exercise or perform their sport.

Aspetar’s Sports Medicine department provide outpatient services for the management of:

  • Exercise-related acute upper and lower limb bone injuries, which do not require surgery
  • Overuse bone injuries/stress fractures
  • Muscle injuries
  • Ligament injuries
  • Acute and overuse tendon injuries related to sports
  • Acute and overuse joint injuries related to sports
  • Injuries and illnesses which affect an athlete’s ability to train or perform their sport
  • Sports concussion

Appointments involve an initial assessment, including taking a full history, doing a physical examination and arranging for appropriate investigations.

Aspetar offers the following investigations:

  • X-rays
  • Ultrasound
  • CT scan
  • 1.5T and 3T MRI scans
  • DEXA scans
  • A variety of blood tests.

Follow-up appointments are arranged to discuss the results of investigations and to plan treatment, which may include:

  • Exercise load modification
  • Targeted exercise
  • Physiotherapy
  • Referral to podiatry, sports nutrition, sport psychology or other sports science discipline
  • Medications or injection therapy
  • Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)
  • Referral to another medical specialty, including surgery

Further follow-up appointments are arranged, as needed, to follow progress.

There are special interest groups, including ankle, hamstring, hip, stress fractures, sports concussion and extracorporeal shock wave therapies.

Aspetar sports physicians also provide athlete screening services (see athlete screening section) and major sports event medical services. Our experts have been involved in World Cups and World Championships in football (FIFA), athletics (World Athletics), rugby (World Rugby), swimming (FINA), handball (IHF), cycling (UCI), hockey, (IHF), winter and summer Olympics and Paralympics, Commonwealth Games as well as professional tennis tournaments (WTA and ATP) and ballet companies.

 

Aspetar has state-of-the-art facilities, including an outpatient department with sports medicine and orthopedic services, radiology, laboratory, rehabilitation and sports science departments (podiatry, sports nutrition, sport psychology) all under one roof.
